Reflection Outline

Critical reflection outline.

What happened in the past few months? My own experience of peer reflection.

What is the significance? What did I learn about myself and others?

What will I do as the result of this experience? How will I use it to inform my future?

Critical Reflection

Language learning is a long term process and there are many techniques for us to improve our language skills. Peer reflection definitely is one of the most effective ways to enhance our writing skills. Through 4 months classes, the peers in ES 1102 gave me a lot of feedback for my essays and presentation. I really appreciate their helps and suggestions.

When I write my essays, I always get too involved in some small points and lose the control for the whole structure. When the peers and friends read the essay, they will point out which part of the essay is too vague and needs to be further illustrated. Also because my English is not fluent and accurate enough, they can give me advises on how to improve it.

The significance of peer review is not only about improving our writing skills but more about learning with the peers and friends and move forward with them. Very often that we can not find out the problems for ourselves but we can figure out the problems for the others. I think that is the meaning of peer reflection. Every friends in this class is like a mirror. Each experiences of peer reflection is a good chance for us to check ourselves and see whether we have the same problems.

The most memorable experience for me is the peer reflection that Teckyi gave for me for my fist draft of reader response. When I wrote my first draft, I chose a very strange thesis which I can not elaborate clearly and I still pay much attention on the grammar problems. Teckyi just told me very directly that the main point was not clear and the connection between the summary and the response was not very well. Then I realized that essay was more about structure rather than the details of language. Even if every sentences are grammatical correct, people still can not get your idea if the essay doesn’t have a clear structure. So I chose another stand and rewrite my reader response.

In my further journey of learning English, I will pay more attention on the structure and content for my essay. I will also keep doing peer reflection and listen to the suggestions that my friends give to me.

Reader response draft 4

In the article “The Perils of Over-sharing in Social Networks”, Emm (2014) discusses the increasing danger of using the Internet.  As more of routine activities have to rely on the Internet today, people begin to feel apprehensive about the authorities and the large companies spying on their personal lives. However, the author believes that the real dangers are hidden behind the mass of seemingly irrelevant information that users who are plugged in choose to put online. These information can be used by some concealed audiences to attack not only the individual but also companies. He indicates that these threats can easily to be ignored due to the false sense of security of users. The author also lists some useful security advice to readers.

The concern for the dangers of over-sharing expressed by the author in the article is reasonable. One of the reasons why people have a tendency to overshare on social media, as elaborated by the author, is because the smartphone is not a usual victim of cyber-attack. The other is due to the neglect from the public as people believe that the dangers of over-sharing have been exaggerated and no one will pay attention to normal users’ social media and digital records for some special reasons. In fact, the dangers are more severe than most people imagine.

As early as 2010, a new company named Identified had started to collect users data , merely by pulling public information from their social media accounts, and allotted a score to each of them to represent their attraction for potential employers. Someone might have a profile in Identified even if they haven’t signed up for the service. These data obviously have large attractions for some big companies and PepsiCo(PEP) had already signed with Identified. Those kinds of collection may never be observed by these latent ‘users’ , but job hopping could be difficult for them if they have low scores(Daniel,2011).

The other concealed observers who may regularly pay attention to social media are lawyers and investigators. Nowadays, Facebook has become an efficient tool for lawyers to find evidence. Different from the traditional investigative ways which rely on following and subpoenaing, the personal details posted on Facebook can help lawyers establish a person’s habits and character and photos shared on Facebook could be more directly used as evidence to show when and where what happened.

Over-sharing on social media may also hurt people’s careers. Threats such as being caught by the boss when someone is loafing on their job are just part of it. More often, the employers will have more in-depth observations of their employees through social media. Doing Google searches and looking through applicants social media pages have become the normal procedure for some companies before they provide interviews. “Never say anything negative about a current or former employer on your social media pages. Employers will reasonably assume that if you trash-talk your current or former employers, they will be the next ones to be trashed” human resources consultant Brenda Vander Meulen(2014) suggests.

The dangers of over-sharing are hidden in various perspective of people’s lives and taking responsibility for what we have posted is essential for netizens. To prevent some irreparable consequences of over-sharing, following some safety tips to protect personal information should be started now.

problem-solution draft 4

With the development of technology, social media becomes an important way for modern citizens to connect with different people and deepen friendships. In order to improve the user experience and shore up the applications popularity on the social software platform, many social media apps provide numerous functions, such as copy, link and sharing, to reduce the operation complicity and offer convenience for users. However, these functions will accelerate the speed of the spread of information and invisibly facilitate the infringement behaviors on social media as plagiarism becomes easier in this area. Because of the severe situation of copyright protection, government and citizens should pay much attention on infringement behaviors.

Sina Weibo, as the Chinese version of Twitter, has about 503 million registered users at the end of 2012. However, only 6% of the users post original works in a given week and about half of the accounts will just repost messages from other users (Mozur, 2013). Although the length of microblogs is limited to 140 words, all these intellectual unique works in Weibo, including creative funny stories, short novels and poems, original pictures, musics and videos are in the protection of Chinese copyright law(You, 2012). Some users may change the authors’ name, tamper with the original works or even clone the whole works without declarations as they retweet the microblogs. Others may use these microblogs for commercial purposes without the permission from the original authors. As the original creators deserve the corresponding rights and interests, all these unauthorized behaviors will be considered as copyright violations.

In the first quarter of 2103 alone, according to the statistic data provided by Sina, the Weibo managers have received more than 1526 online reports and most of them complained about the piracy(Li, 2013).

In 2015, a beauty blogger named Ryiii found that one of the cosmetic websites, YOKA, was using her eyebrow drawing course to attract browsers’ attention without citing her work. This article’s editor even changed the author name and declined that it was her original work. Even after Ryiii sued this website and editor, she only received a personal apology from the editor but not an official one from YOKA.

One of the existing solutions is seeking legal protection from China’s judicial departments. Currently, China has published a number of laws and regulations on copyright protection. Among them, the two most important laws are Tort Law of the People’s Republic of China [ Effective ] and Regulation on the Protection of the Right to the Network Dissemination of Information [ Revised ]. According to these laws, original authors who have been infringed can ask Sina Weibo managers to delete or block the relevant information and prosecute the violators to get the corresponding compensation(Li, 2013).

However, besides the high cost and long process of lawsuit, the low success rate itself has already scared off a lot of people. Although Sina office suggests users to register in their real name, most people will still choose fake names to protect their privacy. When the plaintiffs try to collect evidence for a lawsuit, it will become a large block for them as it is difficult to prove who is the real creator and who is the real violator. If this problem can not be clarified, the lawsuits will have a certain risk of being rejected. Also, the violators can easily delete the relevant articles and pictures. All these behaviors will increase the difficulty of seeking evidence. Moreover, this solution focuses more on the corrective actions that citizens are liable for any criminal offense they committed due to the copyright issue, rather than try to eliminate the crime by enhancing the creativity of the citizens.

The proposed solution, Creativity Enhancement Program(CEP), aims to promote the public’s creativity, especially among the teenagers and consequently eliminate their intention of piracy. The program consists of two aspects, one is from school and the other is from students’ families. Local schools could conduct a series of culture activities such as original singing or design competitions at regular intervals. Winners would be awarded with bonuses such as bursaries or provided with chances to further their talent through advanced professional courses from the famous schools in music or arts area. Since the contests could be fairly held and opportunities could be equally presented, all the students can attend the competitions. The rich prize could motivate the students and inspire their enthusiasm for creativity. The encouragement from students’ families may also play an important role throughout the growing-up process of children. Parents could use several ways to train their children’s creativity such as spending time to brainstorm or inspiring their thought through asking questions. The thinking habit cultivated by the family environment may deeply root into children’s minds and benefit their whole lives. Funds of the establishment of CEP can be obtained from relevant educational departments or school administration. The subsequent cultural activities could be advertised in social media such as Facebook, twitter, school noticeboard, etc.

In conclusion, infringement of copyright is indulged by the development of social media. The government should raise the awareness of the copyright issue through different aspects such as policy, program and education. The Creativity Enhancement Program is believed to promote the awareness of infringement of copyright and increase the creativity among participants.
